BIM Modeling Project – Salem State University Marsh Hall

A Residence Hall Project Made Possible Through BIM Modeling

Overview

Construction of Salem State University’s Marsh Hall in Salem, MA, required a complete BIM Modeling process utilizing Revit Structures software. This design process helped lay the foundation for what ended up being a $57 million, 160,000-SF facility that includes 525 student beds, a 320-seat dining hall, conference facilities, and faculty housing.

Summit Engineering provided the structural design for this major building project, particularly assisting in the construction type of composite steel framing. Due to a compressed schedule, the project went from schematic design to building occupancy in approximately 24 months. The facility opened in 2010 and has since received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The residence hall features solar panels on green roofs that are completely covered in vegetation. It also includes water-saving toilets, significant use of recycled materials, energy saving mechanical systems, and a vegetated swale water reclamation system.
