An Innovative Approach to Institutional Building Design

University of New Hampshire Turbulence Research Facility Durham, NH

Overview

This one-of-a-kind building project at the University of New Hampshire Durham campus represents a truly innovative approach to institutional building design. Completed in 2010, this project involved the construction of a12,400-SF building that would be home to a 230-foot-long, elevated wind tunnel.

Summit Engineering provided engineering consulting services for the project, while Cutler Associates provided construction services. The wind tunnel consists of reinforced concrete masonry walls supporting a cast-in-place concrete floor and pre-cast concrete plank roof. Slab openings were required for drag plates, viewing windows, and a turn-table. Two 400-hp fans that are housed in a pre-engineered metal building at one end of the tunnel create negative pressure (suction) within the building to pull air through the tunnel. The area below the tunnel serves as the control and utility rooms as well as office space.
