Marine Structure Design

An Innovative Approach to Waterfront Structural Building Design in Bar Harbor, ME

Overview

Innovative structure design helped turn this dream project into a reality. The project, which took place in 2009, involved two new structures being erected on Young’s Pier, a popular attraction in this common tourist town. The two buildings, while separated by only 17 feet, differed greatly in size and building design. Building A, containing retail space and two small apartments, was prefabricated offsite in six pieces and placed on a precast slab supported by the pier below. Building B, housing a restaurant, long established in Bar Harbor as a local and tourist favorite, utilized Douglas-fir larch heavy timbers for the roof and floor and was supported by the wood-framed pier.

Summit served as structural engineering consultants for this fast-tracked construction project. The project’s rapidly changing designs required exceptional coordination between the owner, architect, pier designer and Summit Engineering.
