High Liner Foods – Various Locations
Summit Engineering has aided this major provider of frozen fish products with small project support at various facilities throughout New England. Most recently, High Liner Foods was experiencing problems with a steel column settlement issue. Summit determined that the change in use of the interior workspace resulted in columns, once in sub-zero environments, were now exposed to normal temperatures and humidity levels. The initial Freezer design employed dense wood blocking beneath column baseplates to prevent thermal conductivity into the foundation system. These dense wood blocks, under freezing temperatures, were inert. The normal temperatures and higher humidity resulted in the rot of the blocking and the resulting column settlement. Summit designed a procedure to safely jack the columns and repair the column bases. |

New Balance – Lawrence, MA
Summit Engineering has provided a variety of structural engineering services for New Balance factory located in the former Ayer Mills building along the Merrimack River. This 6-story brick building was constructed in 1909 and consists of timber and concrete floor framing supported on structural steel beams and timber/steel columns. Projects have included analysis of floor framing to determine load ratings, installation of new framing for support of mechanical equipment and a boiler replacement project which required new concrete slabs, wall openings and support of the new exhaust stack. |
